An Engadine family found a large Diamond Python curled among toys in a children's playroom. They did the most useful things first: moved the children and pets elsewhere, closed the playroom door and called Harley. Containing the room without approaching the animal limited the number of places it could reach.
A large native python inside the home
Diamond Pythons are non-venomous native constrictors found around Sydney bushland and leafy suburbs. Their dark bodies carry cream or yellow markings, and they may enter houses while seeking warmth, shelter or prey such as rodents. Non-venomous does not mean suitable for handling: a frightened python can bite and a large animal is physically strong.
Working carefully around toys and furniture
A cluttered playroom presents many small concealment points and objects that can be knocked or damaged during a rushed attempt. Harley assessed the python's position and supported its body as it was removed, avoiding unnecessary stress to the animal and disruption to the room. The snake was secured for transport and appropriate relocation.
If a snake is found in one room
- Move people and pets away without crossing close to the snake.
- Close the internal door only if this can be done without approaching the animal.
- Do not search behind furniture or reach among toys if the snake disappears.
- Tell the catcher exactly where the animal was last seen and whether doors or windows are open.
