On a level site the last position may be easy to describe. On an Alfords Point block, the animal may move between terrace levels, beneath a stair landing or behind a wall that cannot be seen from the street. Say which level it reached and whether the catcher must use the front, side or rear entrance.
Do not stand downhill waiting for the snake to reappear, and do not lean over a retaining wall to look into vegetation.
The suburb’s ridge sits above the Georges River and close to bushland connected with Georges River National Park. Sandstone soils, exposed rock, dry woodland and sheltered drainage lines can occur within a short distance of irrigated lawns, pools and paved courtyards.
The Alfords Point Bridge and road corridor are useful landmarks for describing location, but never stop traffic or enter roadside vegetation to follow a snake.
Red-bellied Black Snakes are associated with damp habitat, while Diamond Pythons use a range of Sydney bushland and built shelters. Eastern Browns and smaller snakes can occur in the wider region. Location alone cannot identify the species.
