A snake on the Woodcroft Lake circuit presents a different problem from one behind your washing machine. Start by keeping everyone clear, then describe the setting so the next step matches the actual risk.
A lakeside suburb, not one uniform habitat
Blacktown Council identifies Woodcroft Lake as a walking circuit with fitness stations; its walking guide records an approximately 890-metre loop. The map places the neighbourhood centre, picnic areas, playgrounds and car parks around the lake. The same locality therefore brings people, dogs and maintained recreation spaces close to vegetated water margins.
The council has also recorded wetland bank stabilisation and planting at Woodcroft Lake. Vegetation at a lake edge has a role in the environment; removing it is not an appropriate response to a snake. Keep to the path, allow the animal room to leave and report a public-space hazard to the site manager. At home, focus any later maintenance on the routes you use every day rather than clearing habitat beyond your boundary.
Use Council’s walking information and lake circuit map to describe a public location. A park name alone is less useful than the closest entrance, playground or car park and the direction the snake travelled.

On a path or near the lake
Stop before reaching the snake and give other walkers a calm warning. Bring your dog away using its lead if you can do so safely. Do not form a circle around the animal, encourage it with a stick or let children gather for a look. If it leaves into planting, stay out of that planting.
In a garden, garage or house
Keep pets inside a separate safe area and close access to the affected space if possible. Leave pool equipment, stored boxes and garden furniture where they are. Tell SITC whether the snake is still visible or whether only its last hiding place is known.
Water, shelter and the snakes of western Sydney
A lake does not make every snake nearby a water-loving species. Red-bellied black snakes are associated with moist habitats and often eat frogs, but eastern brown snakes also occur in the wider western Sydney landscape. Browns can use open and modified ground and feed on small vertebrates, including rodents. Both need professional caution, whatever colour you think you saw.
Woodcroft’s planted gardens can also contain hiding places that are not obvious from a tidy lawn: spaces behind retaining blocks, beneath stored items or alongside dense shrubs. These are examples of possible shelter, not evidence of an infestation. A warm day may make a moving snake more noticeable; weather cannot predict whether your particular yard is occupied.
Other Sydney snakes include climbing diamond pythons and common tree snakes, while small golden-crowned snakes use sheltered ground habitat. Yes, if a window or another safe position lets you observe it. If the view is lost, give the last-seen location and time. Finding a concealed animal is not guaranteed, and searching yourself adds risk. The useful information is where it went, not a close-up photograph.
What should I change in the garden afterwards?
Start with food and access: contain pet food, deal with spilled bird seed, have rodent problems assessed, and keep doors and regularly used paths clear. Arrange stored timber or equipment so you can see around it without reaching underneath. A professional can assess building gaps once the animal is out.
