Creek park and everyday streets—not one uniform setting

Penrith City Council lists Werrington Creek Park off Burton Street, with sports fields, an off-leash dog area and parking beside its playspace. Werrington also has established homes and a station-centred corridor. Council’s 2026 Kingswood–Werrington plan describes future growth around health and education institutions; those plans are not proof that every proposed development has been built.

The difference matters when giving directions. A Burton Street address near the open-space corridor, a compact home garden and a site near the station may have different gates, vegetation and safe viewing points. The park is a landmark, not evidence of a snake at any nearby address.

Make the first call useful without approaching the snake

Stay where you can see the last-known position without cornering the animal. Move children and pets away, close an accessible door if the snake is indoors, and leave a clear route for a licensed catcher. Do not lift garden materials or probe a drain.

At a home

Give the street number, which side of the house, the last-seen point and whether a gate is locked. A photo is useful only if it can be taken from a safe distance.

Near a shared entrance

Tell us whether people are using the path, parking area or doorway. Ask others to stay back; do not form a crowd around the animal.

Beside open space

Use the correct street entrance or landmark, then the exact property address. Do not follow a snake toward Werrington Creek, the lake or vegetation.

If the animal disappears, stop at the last safe observation point. A search through cover increases risk and may make its position less certain.

Possible bite to a person: call 000 now

Healthdirect treats every snake bite as a medical emergency. Call 000 for an ambulance, keep the person still and calm, and apply a pressure-immobilisation bandage to the bitten limb if available, following the ambulance operator’s directions. Immobilise the limb with a splint; note the bite and bandage times. Do not wash the bite, use a tourniquet, cut or suck the wound, or attempt to catch the snake. Do not drive the person yourself unless emergency services direct you.

Species are regional possibilities, not Werrington records

The Australian Museum’s eastern brown snake account and its red-bellied black snake account describe species found in the wider Sydney region. Neither account establishes a sighting at a Werrington street, park or customer property. Colour alone is unreliable for identification; keep your distance and leave that to a qualified professional.

Where to call for people and pets

Human emergency

For suspected snakebite call 000, not a hospital switchboard. Nepean Hospital has a 24-hour public emergency department at Derby Street, Kingswood NSW 2747; current ED access is via Gate 7, Somerset Street. Hospital information: (02) 4734 2000.

Pet emergency

Nepean Animal Hospital, 50 Mulgoa Road, Regentville NSW, (02) 4733 3456, says it is open 24/7 for emergencies, including public holidays. Call first for advice and to confirm the case can be received.

Another after-hours option

SASH Western Sydney, 1 Rowood Road, Prospect NSW 2148, (02) 8609 9444, lists a 24/7 emergency department. Call first; do not try to capture the snake to take with your pet.

Connections around Werrington

Use the Penrith and Lower Blue Mountains service hub for the broader area. Council mapping places Werrington among Kingswood, Claremont Meadows, St Marys and Cambridge Park; these are useful nearby guides, not a claim of shared sightings.
