Snakes in the City

A large yard on Gumnut Road, Cherrybrook, was the setting for a different kind of reptile call-out for Snakes in the City: a blue-tongue lizard.

The lizard was quickly located and removed from the property. There was no prolonged search on this occasion, but the encounter offers a useful reminder: identifying a garden reptile correctly matters.

A different visitor, a different response

This call concerned a lizard, rather than a snake. We have not been given the attending catcher’s name or the animal’s destination after removal, so those details are not part of this account.

The quick removal at Gumnut Road does not mean every lizard seen outdoors needs to be removed. When you call, explain whether the animal is trapped, appears injured or is exposed to pets, so the team can discuss the situation.

Keep pets away while you seek advice

A large yard can give a small animal plenty of places to disappear. Keep dogs and cats away, avoid chasing or cornering the reptile, and note where you last saw it.

If you are uncertain whether you have seen a lizard or a snake, keep your distance. Only provide a photograph if you can take one from an existing safe position without moving closer.

For local help, see our Cherrybrook snake catcher page. If a sighting is in a neighbouring suburb, our West Pennant Hills and Castle Hill pages provide local information. For an unidentified snake, read our snake identification guidance and safety advice.
